Growing up as a teenager, I was completely naive about technology until I got admitted into higher institution in Nigeria.

I was completely unsophisticated that I was not confident enough to turn on a computer on my own.

Although, this helped me avoid distractions caused by the internet, and allowed me to read my books, but it also kept me away from the mystique, excitement and enigma of the world outside Port-Harcourt, Nigeria where I was raised.

It took me a couple of months to realize the power of technology and its role in improving the lives of people around the world.

One common fallacy is that technology is just for the nerds. This misconception assumes most people make use of tech at a limited frequency, which may have been true fifteen to twenty years back.

This no longer applies to the modern-day world that is overburden with the internet, social media, mobile devices, smart vehicles and smart houses. In today’s world, competence with existing technology is a mandatory skill for everyone, especially students.

Becoming tech-savvy is not about knowing everything about technology. It is also not about sophisticated skills like programming an android application or knowing how to set up a server machine. Higher abilities with technology are always appreciated, however, tech-savviness is more about being confident about the basic technologies we use in our daily life. Feeling confident and ease as a technology user is a very useful goal and will positively impact your life in many ways.

I define Tech-savvy as knowing a lot about technology or being proficient in the use of technology.”

First things first, the most important part in considering becoming tech savvy is to focus on your own goals and progress. Don’t focus on the idea of learning it all at once or thinking about everything you cannot do. Also, try not to be distracted or frustrated by the abilities of others, comparism is often the thief of joy.

We are all knowledgeable and ignorant, just on different subjects. The goal is sustainable, no matter the pace or where you’re starting from (think 5% better every day).

Like all inventions, technology provides the potential for immense benefits as well as many opportunities or problems. These problems can make us feel frustrated, angry, disappointed, discouraged and helpless. The great news is that we can eliminate these negative feelings by learning to use technology competently.

I consider these two reasons the biggest benefits of using tech.

  1. To make creating, sharing, playing, and working efficient and fun.

Every day our lives are more intertwined with technology. From ordering meals to staying in touch with family (communication) to running a business or being an educator, technology is integrated into everything and will only keep increasing.

2. When you become efficient and skilled with tech you can save yourself lots of time.

This allows you to focus more energy on your priorities and enjoy life more. Most communications rely on tech, and currently, the world is influenced by technology because technology makes work easier and faster in different aspects.

Competence with technology helps us better understand the information network governing our daily life and helps us explore the learning possibilities beyond the classes offered at school.

Even most of the non-tech companies these days use technologies like machine learning, artificial intelligence and data analytics to serve their customers better, the state needs more tech-savvy workers for its HI-TECH industries. It is crystal clear that they love tech-savvy people, because a team of such people will adorn them to cope with future problems.
